PBA Pays Tribute To Fallen Heroes Of Marawi City On Independence Day

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) paid tribute to the soldiers and police killed in Marawi City clashes, right before Game 2 of the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup semi-finals between the Star Hotshots and the San Miguel Beermen.

The league honored the soldiers and police killed in action by unfurling the Philippine flag on Monday, June 12, Independence Day, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“In celebration of Philippine Independence today, the PBA recognizes the heroism of our patriots, past and present, in preserving our freedom, democracy, and pursuit of self-reliance,” said the league in its tribute, which was read over the arena speakers before a moment of silence.

Players, coaches, and officials from both teams, as well as league officials including Commissioner Chito Narvasa and Media Bureau Chief Willie Marcial all held on to the giant flag at center court during the tribute.

“In the context of today’s unfolding events, we pay tribute to the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police for their tireless efforts in keeping our country safe and protected from dangerous elements, for the soldiers and military personnel who have given their lives for our country and for those who champion the cause of freedom.”

Members of the broadcast team were also seen holding the flag while the crowd stood in respect.
