Duterte Gov’t Launches Free Wi-Fi, High-Speed Internet Services In Edsa Starting June 12
The Department of Information and Communications Technology
(DICT), together with the National Telecommunications Commmission (NTC), launch
on Independence Day, June 12, free Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet services,
dubbed as “Alay Para sa Malayang Pilipino,” in the whole stretch of EDSA.
The project is in line with President Rodrigo Duterte’s
promise during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the government
will provide free Wi-Fi services in public areas nationwide.
“Wi-Fi access shall be provided at no charge in selected
public places including parks, plazas, public libraries, schools, government
hospitals, train stations, airports, and seaports,” the President said.
The Chief Executive further instructed the DICT “to provide
Wi-Fi access in selected public places throughout the country.”
“I have ordered the newly-created DICT to develop a National
Broadband Plan to accelerate the deployment of fiber optic cables and wireless
technologies to improve Internet speed,” President Duterte said.
To make the EDSA project happen, the DICT employed
strategies, which include providing access points in all MRT stations and in
between stations and enhancing infrastructures for cellular services along
EDSA.
Service testing of the project has been done on Saturday,
June 10. Priority stretch of the project is from Cubao to Guadalupe.
